Genesis 28: Jacob’s Dream Part 2

At this point, Jacob is journeying alone to find a wife in a foreign land. Although he had many missteps in the path to God’s will, he fully recognized God’s power. In the loneliness and unfamiliarity of his journey, Jacob turned to the Lord for safety. He used a rock as a pillow in the middle of the desert! We must lay ourselves down before the Lord, completely exposed, in order for His will and His power to take command of our lives.

“A time is coming and in fact has come when you will be scattered, each to your own home. You will leave me all alone. Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me.’ – John 16:32

Then, Jacob dreams. In this dream, he sees the stairway to Heaven and hears God repeat the promises made to both Abraham and Isaac. By continuing the path of his forefathers, Jacob reaps the benefits from the Lord of a Promised Land and many descendants. By laying all of our earthly comforts down, we are able to embrace the full comfort of the Lord.

This ladder between the Heavens and the Earth represents God’s constant correspondence with us. He is all-knowing and constantly present. Angels help serve the purpose of Providence, God’s care and nurturing of our lives. We, too, should do like the Angels, constantly serving God’s purpose.

“Praise the LORD, you his angels, you mighty ones who do his bidding, who obey his word. Praise the LORD, all his heavenly hosts, you his servants who do his will.’ – Psalm 103:20-21

The stairway to Heaven for us is Christ: A foot on this Earth in human-form, reaching up to Heaven as the Divine. Our way to Heaven is through God’s Son, Christ, and the acceptance of Him into our hearts as the forgiver and bearer of all our sins.

“He then added, “Very truly I tell you,you will see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.” – John 1:51

“…and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.’ – Colossians 1:20

“…to be put into effect when the times reach their fulfillment—to bring unity to all things in heaven and on earth under Christ.’ – Ephesians 1:10

Through Jacob’s journey we are overwhelmed with comfort. Comfort that the Lord can make good of any fallen man. That God’s power can provide us protection from any Earthly evil. And comfort that through Christ, we have a constant connection with the Divine and a stairway to Heaven waiting for us.
